What Is the Fit Kids Bill?

SUMMARY of the FIT KIDS BILL:

I am so thankful and proud to say that our FIT Kids BILL unanimously passed by voice vote in the House of Representatives on April 21, 2010.

Let me explain to you what this first step in returning quality Physical Education actually means.

THE FIT Kids BILL requires that:

1.   School Districts make available to the families and the communities that they serve, information on the type of physical education being provided to students in each grade as it relates to the recommendations established by the CDC for that grade level, and to report to the state, data on the amount of required Physical Education time for students at all grade levels.

2.   School Districts provide information to families on the importance of living healthy and active lifestyles, and existing school programs and policies that promote these lifestyles.

3.   School Districts provide to parents, the most recent national recommendations for physical education and physical activity for elementary and secondary students.

4.   School Districts to assist individual schools in collecting and providing similar information to families enrolled at that school, including descriptions of facilities available for P.E. and physical activity, and information on any Health or Wellness Councils that the school may have.

5.   A study be enacted by the National Research Council to determine the best way to incorporate physical activity in to the school day, and to study the relationship between physical education/physical activity, and academic achievement and learning.

6.   That the Department of Education make available Best Practices for "innovative and successful" physical education programs and policies, to individual schools and teachers.

This Bill may only be a first step, but..... it is the first step.
